Analyses of iron and concrete shielding experiments at JAEA/TIARA with JENDL/HE-2007, ENDF/B-VII.1 and FENDL-3.0

We have analyzed the iron and concrete shielding experiments with the 40 and 65 MeV neutron sources at TIARA in Japan Atomic Energy Agency with the latest high-energy nuclear data libraries, JENDL/HE-2007, ENDF/B-VII.1 and FENDL-3.0. The Monte Carlo code MCNP-5 and ACE files of JENDL/HE-2007, ENDF/B-VII.1 and FENDL-3.0, which were supplied from JAEA, BNL and IAEA, respectively, were used for this analysis. The followings are found out from the results. (1) The calculations with JENDL/HE-2007 agree with all the measured ones well; (2) Those with ENDF/B-VII.1 tend to overestimate the measured ones with the thickness of the assemblies largely; (3) Those with FENDL-3.0 agree with the measured ones well for the iron experiment, while they overestimate the measured ones well for the concrete experiment largely. Some data in ENDF/B-VII.1 and FENDL-3.0 should be revised.

Validation of radioactivity calculation code system DCHAIN-SP

A radioactivity calculation code system DCHAIN-SP was validated in view of the following points: (1) Activation cross section data library for the energy region below 20 MeV. (2) NMTC/JAM code for calculation of the nuclide yield induced by the high energy particles above 20 MeV. (3) DCHAIN-SP code system which treats overall nuclide yield by the high energy particles. 42 of activation cross sections and 22 tritium production cross sections were revised so that the DCHAIN-SP calculation could improve its accuracy within 30% for typical materials irradiated by 14-MeV neutrons. The NMTC/JAM code was improved to implement the GEM model for better estimation of light fragment production. Accuracy of the nuclide yield for proton induced reactions in 10 MeV - 10 GeV still remains in the level of a factor of 2 to 3. The DCHAIN-SP code system was employed for the analysis of time evolution of the radioactivity produced in the samples on a thick mercury target bombarded with 2.83 and 24 GeV protons. It is found that the code system agrees with the measured data by a factor of 2 to 3.

Measurement of activation cross sections for mercury isotopes in the neutron energy range between 13.4 and 14.9MeV

Activation cross sections for mercury isotopes have been measured at neutron energy between 13.4 and 14.9 MeV by means of the activation method using Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS) at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Measured cross sections are $$^{196}$$Hg(n, 2n)$$^{195m,g}$$Hg, $$^{198}$$Hg(n, 2n)$$^{197m,g}$$Hg, $$^{198}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{198g}$$Au, $$^{199}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{199}$$Au, $$^{200}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{200m,g}$$Au, $$^{201}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{201}$$Au, $$^{202}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{202}$$Au, $$^{204}$$Hg(n, 2n)$$^{203}$$Hg and $$^{204}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{204}$$Au. The cross sections of the $$^{202}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{202}$$Au and $$^{204}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{204}$$Au reactions were measured for the first time. For the $$^{196}$$Hg(n, 2n)$$^{195m,g}$$Hg, $$^{198}$$Hg(n, 2n)$$^{197m,g}$$Hg, $$^{198}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{198g}$$Au and $$^{199}$$Hg(n, p)$$^{199}$$Au reactions, the cross sections at plural neutron energies were measured for the first time. The present data were compared with the experimental data reported previously and the recent evaluations, and it was shown that some evaluations need to be improved.
